Getting Around

Hong Kong has an extensive and efficient public transportation system.

 

Airport Express

MTR

Getting around town is easy and fast. The metro system called MTR has a train every 4 minutes during non-peak hours and every minute during peak hours.

 

Buses

There are several major bus companies that service around Hong Kong. For more accurate details about stops, routes and arrival times at certain stops you can download the corresponding bus company apps.

 

Minibus

Green minibus follow set routes and have designated bus stops and can be paid by cash with exact fare (no chnge will be given) or Octopus Card. Red minibus loosly follow set routes but do not have

designated bus stops. You can hail the bus at any point on the street and you can also alight at any point by signalling the driver. These minibus are usually cash only and the driver can provide change for small notes.

 

Taxi

There are 3 types of Taxi in Hong Kong, the opening price covers the first 2 km of travel.

Red Taxi: Service almost all areas of Hong Kong. Opening Price HKD$24.00

Green Taxi: Service only New Territories areas of Hong Kong Opening Price HKD$20.50 (cannot go to Hong Kong Island or Kowloon areas).

Blue Taxi: Service only Lantau Island areas of Hong Kong Opening Price HKD$19.00 (cannot go to Hong Kong Island or Kowloon areas).

 

Uber & Didi

Uber and Didi are available in Hong Kong however pay attention as some app based transport providers have increased rates during peak hours or times of incliment weather.

 

Octopus Card

When in Hong Kong it is recommended that you purchase an Octopus card to help make your time in the city easier and smoother.

A Sold Tourist Octopus Card is available from the Airport, any MTR station, Seven 11 and Circle K

stores for HKD$39 and does not contain any credit. You can top-up your Octopus card from HKD$50 and in

multiples of HKD$50 up to HKD$500 at any MTR station, Seven 11 or Circle K store.

Your Octopus card can be used to make purchases or pay for transport anywhere you see this sign.

Examples of places that accept Octopus Cards:

 All public transport (except taxi)

 Convienence stores (Seven 11, Circle K, etc)

 Supermarkets (Park'n Shop, Welcome, etc)

 Popular restaurants (McDonalds, KFC, Burger King, etc)

 Hong Kong style fast food (Cafe de Coral, Fairwood, Genki Sushi, Yoshinoya, etc)

 Pharmasutical stores (Mannings, Watsons, Sasa, etc)

 Clothing stores (M&S, Giordano, H&M, Bossini, Baleno, etc)

Passport of these countries must apply for visas to land in Hong Kong.

All other passports can enter Hong Kong on a visa free period of 7, 14, 30, 90 or 180 days.
